June brings Beale Park, boat launches and the end of the September course, which also heralds the start of the Summer's short course programme.

At Beale Park the weather was grim for the first two days, but suddenly on Sunday there was dazzling sunshine and people could throw off their coats.
The Academy marquee was larger than ever, and Bob Hinks and Will Reed sailed from the pontoon. John Harris, Ian Thomson, Dan Lipczynski, Joe Blathwayt, Bob Hinks and Will Reed all brought boats from earlier courses, Instructor Justin Adkin came with the rowing/sailing boat he has designed and built with students, Steve Petford's clinker crib attracted much attention and Alex Thriepland's canoe represented the Class of September 2008, all of whose boats stayed in Lyme Regis, getting ready for the launch on 11th June.

The Boat Launch on 11th June was celebrated in blazing sunshine. About a hundred and fifty people gathered to walk the boats down to the sea and watch as the Class of September 2008 launched them one by one into the water. Nine boats were launched in total; five student boats, one instructor designed and built with students composite boat, a stitch and tape dinghy built in the early days of the long course, a boat started by Peter Watson a few years ago and finished by Lars Hersfeldt of the March 2009 class and Will Reed's boat, now completely finished
The day marked new beginnings for the students as boat builders. However, although they have finished their course, some of the graduates will be working at the Academy on their next project. More of which later. But to see more photographs of the launch, click here.
Class of September 2008, shown below. Some will be coming back to the Academy as 'The Victory Syndicate', undertaking a Victory class restoration project on boat Z52.
There will soon be a page on this website dedicated to the restoration. The photos below show the boat on delivery. The syndicate expect the restoration to take about a year and hope to be sailing her at Cowes next Summer.
The Academy's Summer Short Course Programme started on 17th June with an RYA 'Yacht and Boat Electrics' course. Philippe Delaoutre, a member of the 'Building a Boat - Initial Set-Up' course has produced an amusing and informative blog on the time he spent here before going home to France. To see Philippe's blog click here. We were all sorry to see Philippe, Gal, Andrew and William leave - the five days they were here passed very quickly. |
