Courses

We offer a wide range of training courses. Our emphasis is on the practical and students spend less than 10% of their time in the classroom. Students are provided with the skills and knowledge that only hands-on experience can bring.

See below for details on the flagship 38 week 'long' boat building course, 8 week woodworking skills course, 1-5 day short courses and our new 10 day West Greenland Kayak Building course.

Long Course

38 week course in Boat Building, Maintenance and Support, City & Guilds Level III.  Teaching students to build boats to professional standards and offering some students the opportunity to build their own boats as part of the course.

If you would like details of the Long Course fees please contact Gemma Blathwayt on 01297 445545 or email office@boatbuildingacademy.com

Short Courses

1 - 5 day courses in specific aspects of boat building, woodworking and related skills, run twice a year from January to March and June to September.  Suitable for complete beginners as well as experienced boat builders wishing to add or hone a particular skill. If you have a personal project in mind let us know in advance and, as we work with a high Instructor to Student ratio, we will see whether we can adapt the training to suit. We are always happy to discuss which short course would best meet your needs.

Woodworking Skills Course

An 8 week course suitable for complete beginners, the course has nothing to do with boats but is based on our tried and tested boat building training philosophy and is

intensive and highly practical.  A City & Guilds 6217-05 or 6217-06 Level 1 certificate in Carpentry and Joinery or Furniture Making is awarded, but the syllabus is much wider than City & Guilds requirements and this is reflected by award of a Boat Building Academy certificate.  As part of the course students also design and make their own personal project piece of furniture.  If there is something specific you would like to work on we are happy to discuss how to tailor the course to meet your requirements.

West Greenland Kayak Building
A 10 day, residential, fully-catered course.  Students build a 'made-to-measure' kayak in either linen canvas or ballistic nylon and a paddle to take away with them.  Ballistic nylon kayaks take a 'first paddle' in the sea at Lyme Regis at the end of the course.
