The
Course
Build
your own custom-fitted West Greenland Kayak and paddle
using traditional methods in 11 days. The 'skin-on-frame'
kayaks are extremely lightweight weighing 13-16 kilograms,
held together mainly with synthetic sinew and some wooden
dowels. With a spruce frame, oak ribs and white
nylon skin protected by Coelan (high quality elastic,
UV and abrasion resistant polyurethane) the kayak's
translucence looks great on the water.

On
the first day of the course students introduce themselves
to their workbenches by making a traditional wooden
paddle. Then the group gets to work sawing, planing,
lashing, steam bending, dowelling, oiling, sewing and
coating, finishing with an afternoon at the Boat Building
Academy in Lyme Regis paddling their own kayaks.

photo diary of the build.
No
woodworking or paddling experience is necessary but
students
should be practically-minded... and ready for an intensive
11 days. Because the course is so intensive it
is not run at the Boat Building Academy but at nearby
Trill Farm, a sustainable living centre that provides
course members with camping facilities or a room in
the farmhouse. Three farm-produced (where possible)
cooked meals are provided every day for those who don't
want the distractions of cooking and washing-up. Please
contact us for a sample menu.
Course

The
cost of the course is £1,700. This covers instruction,

participant's partners are welcome to stay (without
joining the course) at the same rate. Campsite
facilities include a small open barn and courtyard providing
storage, shelter, cooking space and a place to eat at
tables constructed using larch from Trill's woods. Solar
PV and a mini wind turbine power some basic fairy lighting
for the evenings. Rustic showers and sinks have solar
heated water, pumped from the spring and there are composting
toilets. Fires are a fundamental part of camping
and there is a central fire pit with plenty of free
logs from Trill's woods.
