Boat Building Academy courses are highly practical with a “hands on” approach to boat building training.

"Our success is exemplary; 83% of our graduates have achieved credits or distinctions."
Director, BBA

While we can exercise considerable flexibility to meet individual requirements, the content and standards for the long course are designed to equip the student with the knowledge, handskills and efficiency required by industry. Time spent in the classroom is kept to a minimum, 95% of the course is conducted in workshops where students will build boats, either course projects or their own.

Each year, in June and December, students enter the City & Guilds of London Institute 2451 Boat Building, Maintenance and Support Levels II and III examinations for an internationally recognised formal qualification.

There are no pre-requisite qualifications or experience required for enrolling. Applicants are assessed for suitability on the basis of motivation, a mature attitude and above all the enthusiasm and desire to pursue the highest standards. Ages range from the 18 year old school leaver to the sixty plus. Ambitions are varied, from those who seek a full career in the marine industry to those wishing to switch careers to the marine sector. Others are taking time out from their careers or retiring - early or in the normal course - and fulfilling an ambition to build or restore their own boat. In the past we have also had husband and wife teams!

Students come from all parts of the globe, and the mix of nationalities, backgrounds and experience all sharing a common passion adds enormous value to the course. Those seeking jobs in the boatbuilding world after graduating have, without exception, been successful.
