Gig Build People

Gail McGarva, a British Sign Language Interpreter before she came on the long course, was awarded a full City & Guilds bursary and named 2005 British Marine Federation Trainee of the Year.  She built an 18' Shetland double-ended boat, then worked in Ireland on an Atlantic Challenge 38' gig build.  Gail joined the Academy as an Assistant Instructor and was Project Leader on the gig build.

Steve Keats studied at the Boat Building Academy from 1999 to 2000.  Since then, among other boats, he has built a Cornish pilot gig for Swanage gig club and now runs his own business 'Keats Craft', which as well as boat building offers 'designs in wood'.  Steve worked on the gig as a consultant.

Polly Simmonds was a student on the September 2006 course at the Boat Building Academy.  Originally from the Scillies, she built a 13' clinker Beer beach boat while on the course and launched it at the Beale Park Thames Boat Show in 2007.  She worked on the gig as a volunteer, then went to work on tall ship 'Pelican' before returning to be part of the gig launch.

Richard Capstick qualified as a Pharmacist in 1968, worked in medical research for four years, then worked in the NHS. He received his PhD in 1977.  Richard saw the Boat Building Academy on visits to Lyme from his home in Taunton and, always having liked making things, fulfilled an ambition by becoming a student in 2002.  On the course he built a 16' Giles Jolly boat.  He is now semi-retired and was a voluntary worker on the gig.

Chris Douglas jointly owned his first boat with his brother at 13.  At 18 he emigrated to Australia as a '£10 Pom' and spent 11 years working all over Australia and New Zealand in 47 different jobs.  He returned to Lyme an 'Aussie' before spending over 3 years with new wife Jill in the Mediterranean on a boat.  After moving back to Falmouth Chris did the Azores and back race with his local hero, Brian Dale.  He and his family then lived on Ibiza for 11 years, before returning to Lyme where he now works as an antique furniture restorer.  He was a major force in the founding of Lyme Regis Gig Club and worked on the gig as a volunteer.
