June 2008 Events

June flew by, busy even by Academy standards.  Students on the September 2007 course sat their exams on 4th and 5th, then some of them took their boats to the Beale Park Thames Boat Show for Friday 6th to Sunday 7th, where they met up with staff, former students and other friends of the Academy.  It was the perfect weekend, camping by the Thames, looking at boats, sailing boats and talking about boats.

Then came Sunday 29th June, and the gig launch.  The sun shone on the mayor, the vicar, the town crier and the town; sea shanties were sung, salt was scattered, the boat was blessed and rowed across the bay.  It was memorable.

Now he has finished the course, Ian has started a business, 'Nestaway'.  His website is at www.nestawayboats.com.  He is now building a workshop in Christchurch and will start production from September

Former students came, bringing the boats they've been working on since leaving the course.  Myke Littler, now part of the Slipway Co-operative in Bristol, was there with 'Young Bristol', the gig the Co-operative has just finished.

And last but not least, Rob Hitchen brought his Salcombe Yawl.  Rob was named British Marine Federation Trainee of the Year in March, because of his exceptional progress on the course and his focus and hard work setting up his business after graduating.  The yawl looked splendid and Rob's business is thriving.  His website is at www.salcombeboatbuilder.com and click here for the photographic diary of the build at the Academy

Then it was all back to Lyme Regis for the end of the September course, celebrated by the course boat launch in Lyme Regis harbour and a barbecue on the beach on Thursday 12th.

Last, but not least, congratulations to Instructor Justin Adkin and his wife, Alex, on the birth of their first baby, Tilly, on 27th May.
