16′ Bassett Rascal 2-seater Runabout – Sam Smith
The 16’ Bassett Rascal, commissioned by student Sam Smith, is an upscaled version of the 14’ Ken Bassett Rascal, plans from Wooden Boat.
The hull is cold moulded Robbins marine ply on sawn Douglas Fir frames. The hull was faired, sheathed externally in epoxy and fibreglass, then painted. Powered by a 60HP 2-stroke Evinrude outboard, the boat has been coloured in the classic 50’s style, matching the hull’s paintwork to the red and cream of the engine.
The deck is mainly 6mm Sitka Spruce veneers laid over a plywood subdeck. It has been coated with around 9 coats of Deks Ojle D1 Oil but varnish may also be applied later.
Sam Smith, the commissioning student has teamed up with fellow students, Simon Olszowski, Jamie Chitty and Sam Sheppard to form the Beautiful Boat company, their website can be found here (http://thebeautifulboatcompany.co.uk/) They will build Rascals commercially.
The bill of materials includes weights of fiberglass cloth used, brands of glue and colours of paint. Although by no means a definitive list of materials used it shows the main specification of the boat seen in the photos.
