20′ Paul Gartside Outboard Launch – Steven Harrison

This 20’ Paul Gartside outboard runabout was commissioned by student Steve Harrison. With an 8’ beam she is the largest of the Class of February 2017 projects.  Powered by a 100HP Honda outboard she has a wheelhouse with full headroom cuddy, foredeck and side decks. The wheelhouse detail, decks, soles, rubbing strakes stem and backbone are all made from European oak.

Originally designed to for glued clinker construction, ‘Lady Jane’ is of strip plank tongue and groove construction using yellow cedar as the core material, as suggested by Paul Gartside on the plans. The smooth cedar hull has been sheathed in two layers of glass and epoxy biaxial mat. The choice to strip plank rather than use clinker planking was not only Steve’s aesthetic choice but also will need less maintenance.

Student David Fraser made a cold moulded captain’s chair, but thanks to an issue with external upholstery it could not be fitted for launch day. The bespoke chair was cold moulded around a former and veneered in oak to match the detail of the wheelhouse.
