David

After studying Politics at university, David decided that he wanted a career doing something practical. He has enjoyed being around boats for most of his life and is hoping to start working in the marine industry after the course.

Emily

Emily always had a love of trees, wood and water, and wanted to combine those passions by learning to build boats. Having sailed, rowed and swam, she was keen to be involved in the marine community after finishing the course.

Having worked in the environmental sector for the last 30 years, sustainability of the boats we build will be really important to me in my boat building career.

George

George was attracted to the Academy by his strong interest in woodworking and boating. After the course, he hopes to work open his own boatyard one day

Harrison

Harrison came to the Academy after completing a Blacksmithing, Welding and Fabrication course at Kingston Maurward college in Dorchester. Enrolling on the 40-week Boat Building course has been a long-held dream for him.

Jonathan

A lifelong yacht and dinghy sailor, he swapped his day job after 40 years working in IT around the world, to pursue his love of the sea as a fledgling wooden boat builder. After the course, Jonathan plans to seek work in a boat yard.

Karl

Karl hails from Edinburgh where he worked as an insurance underwriter. He hopes to have a ‘hands-on’ career after the course.

Luke

Luke hails from Cornwall, where he had been working on a dairy farm. He joined the course to gain a solid foundation in woodworking and boat building.

Obi

Obi is a designer with a specialist interest in sustainability and has worked in the interior architecture, retail design and higher education industries. The BBA boat course complements her 3D form and material explorations whilst also developing her practical crafting skills.
