When the organisers of ‘Made’ London asked whether we would like to display some of the boats built by students as part of the event we were delighted. ‘Made’, a selected exhibition showing the highest quality contemporary craft and design, is held at One Marylebone, a stunning Sir John Soane Church in central London (directly opposite Great Portland Street tube station and next door to Regents Park). Five of the Boat Building Academy boats were displayed in the grounds and one took centre stage in a ground floor hallway.
The boats on exhibition were traditional clinker Ack Emma, a traditional clinker Lawton tender, another traditional clinker dinghy Wally, cold moulded motor launch ‘Tee Mu’, glued clinker Whitehall Skiff ‘Nicky Nacky Noo‘ and a glued clinker Iain Oughtred designed Arctic Tern.
During four days in a magnificent building, surrounded by inspirational makers and their work, we met old friends and made new ones. The boats, in an urban setting, got the attention their workmanship deserves. It was memorable.
