Writing Desk by Barnaby Smith

For his personal project piece Barnaby designed a writing desk (although it is sometimes mistaken as a table) with an African mahogany frame. The rather unusual top to the desk is made from Rengas, a wood from the jungles of Borneo, which was cut down in the early 1970s by his father’s friend Bill. The wood came to the academy with Barnaby in planks which were so old and dirty it was impossible to see what the grain of the wood looked like. Once planed and oiled it brought its hidden beauty.
